Admissions steps

Prerequisites: 

Most medical schools require a bachelor's degree with specific coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. However, it’s important to note that a pre-med degree is not the only pathway to medical school in the US. Students from diverse academic backgrounds, including humanities and social sciences, can also apply if they have completed the prerequisite coursework, which may include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT): 

Prospective medical students must take the MCAT, a standardized test that assesses problem-solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioural, and social science concepts. MCAT scores are a crucial component of medical school applications.

Extracurricular Activities and Clinical Experience: 

Medical schools look for applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to healthcare through volunteer work, research, clinical experience, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities.

Letters of Recommendation:

Applicants typically need letters of recommendation from professors, healthcare professionals, or supervisors who can attest to their academic abilities, character, and suitability for a career in medicine.

Primary Application: 

Prospective medical students use the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) to apply to allopathic (MD) medical schools or the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS) for osteopathic (DO) medical schools. These centralized application services allow applicants to submit one application to multiple schools.

Secondary Applications: 

After receiving the primary application, medical schools may send secondary applications with additional essay questions and requests for more information.

Interviews: 

Medical schools invite select applicants for interviews to assess their interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and fit for the institution's culture and mission.

Acceptance: 

Following interviews, medical schools extend offers of acceptance to applicants. Some schools operate on rolling admissions, while others notify applicants on specific dates.

Post-Acceptance Requirements: 

Accepted students must complete any remaining prerequisites, provide updated transcripts, and fulfil any other requirements specified by the medical school.

Matriculation: 

Once all requirements are met, accepted students matriculate into medical school and begin their medical education journey.
